Hussey out for Shield season

Amid concerns about his limited availability, Mike Hussey has opted out of the second half of the Sheffield Shield season.

Mike Hussey will not return to the Western Warriors for the second half of the Sheffield Shield season.

Hussey met coach Justin Langer on Monday to discuss returning to the state side, but both agreed the batsman's limited availability was a problem.

"On reflection, I know in my heart that as much as I would like to play Sheffield Shield cricket for Western Australia, it would not be fair on the team and I believe it is time for the younger players to step up and grab their opportunities with both hands," Hussey said in a statement.

Langer said Hussey was an iconic player who he'd love to have in the team, but that "he has made it clear that his heart isn't 100 per cent in returning to Shield cricket".

"Mike and I had a good chat this morning and, in the end, we agreed it wouldn't be in the best interests of the team, or himself, to return to the Warriors for the remainder of this season."

The third-placed Western Warriors resume their campaign at home on Wednesday, hosting the Tasmanian Tigers at the WACA.
