I didn't expect Hawkins report: GWS' Davis

GWS co-captain Phil Davis says he didn't expect Geelong's Tom Hawkins to get reported for striking him in last Saturday's AFL match.

Greater Western Sydney co-captain Phil Davis say he didn't expect Geelong's Tom Hawkins to be reported for striking him.

Hawkins has been suspended by the AFL for one match for striking Davis during last Saturday's match in Geelong.

"For me, the incident itself, there wasn't much in it," Davis told Fox Footy's AFL 360 program on Thursday night.

"There was a bit of a push and a shove and then he went to sort of hit me in the chest and it went a bit high and just got me in the head."

Davis denied he exaggerated the force of the blow.

"It was really just a bit of a surprised reaction for me rather than try and put any mayo on it, like some people were trying to suggest," he said.

"Those things happen a fair bit in footy and I didn't expect him to be reported.

"But that is the way it was and the Match Review Panel have made it pretty clear that contact to the head is prohibited."

For Davis, it was the fourth time this season an opponent has been booked for striking him - resulting in two suspensions and two fines.

"I'm not sure what it is. I don't really say much. I just sort of go about my business," he said.

"You would have to ask the people that have hit me.

"I like to think I'm a pretty fair player and I'm not too much of an antagonist.

"I just like playing footy, I love to compete and I like to help my teammates so maybe that is a little bit of a formula for getting hit. But I think it's more of a freak occurrence than a pattern."
