Robin Williams' daughter Zelda says she will never understand why her dad could not find it in his heart to stay even though he was loved so deeply.

Zelda, 25, has posted her "only" statement on Tumblr following Williams' death on Tuesday.

The statement reads: "My family has always been private about our time spent together. It was our way of keeping one thing that was ours, with a man we shared with an entire world. But now thats gone, and I feel stripped bare.

"My last day with him was his birthday, and I will be forever grateful that my brothers and I got to spend that time alone with him, sharing gifts and laughter.

"He was always warm, even in his darkets moments. While I'll never, ever understand how he could be loved so deeply and not find it in his heart to stay," Zelda wrote.

She went on to say that she finds "minor" comfort knowing her grief is shared with millions.

"It doesn't help the pain, but at least its a burden countless others now know we carry, and so many have offered to help lighten the load. Thank you for that."

Zelda says her father loved to make people laugh and "was one of the kindest, most generous, gentlest souls I've ever known".

"I know for certain right now, one of them I that not just my world, but the entire world is forever a little darker, less colourful and less full of laughter in his abscence."

Williams last Instagram post was of a photo of himself and a young Zelda to wish her a happy 25th birthday.

"Quarter of a century old today but always my baby girl. Happy Birthday @zeldawilliams Love you!" Williams wrote in the caption accompanying the black and white photo.

Williams died on Tuesday at his California home at the age of 63. Authorities say he hanged himself.
