Dungog resident Colleen Jones says she got out just in time before her home was swept away by flood waters.
A shocked Ms Jones hugged friends in the street on Wednesday morning just metres from where her house was ripped from its foundations 24 hours earlier.
"We just got out," the 59-year-old told AAP in the NSW Hunter town.
"I was just terrified. It is just unbelievable, the current of water.
"It is just heartbreaking.
"It was just horrific to watch, just to see your house crumble."
Three people have died in the floods with Colin Webb, 79, Robin MacDonald, 68 and Brian Wilson, 72, all believed to have been trapped in their residences.
In the ferocity of the flood, Ms Jones' car was smashed up and ended up sitting right in front of the mechanics across the road.
Ms Jones, who spent Tuesday night at the local pub with her husband Stephen, said she had lost everything in the flood and local residents supplied her with clothes and toiletries.
When the water receded all that was left of her home was some wood and bricks.
Ms Jones, who managed to save her dogs, found a photo of her and her brothers when they were young around the corner with the streets awash with mud.
