Iain Murray to spearhead Aust sailing team

Australian Sailing has enlisted the services of sailing legend Iain Murray to prepare the team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Sailing legend Iain Murray has been recruited to spearhead Australia's highly-successful sailing team as it prepares for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The vastly-experienced Murray takes over as Australian Sailing's performance director, replacing Peter Conde who recently landed a big new role as director of the Australian Institute of Sport.

Murray returns to Australian sport after serving as regatta director for the last two stagings of the America's Cup in 2014 and 2017.

"Iain is one of the few people in the world who has been involved in every dimension the sport has to offer," said AS president Matt Allen.

"He is recognised for his design and achievements in 18ft skiffs, is an Olympian (2008) and multiple world and Australian champion.

"His connection with the America's Cup includes as skipper, he has twice held the role of regatta director and hosted the competitors forum.

"Over many years, he has had enormous success in ocean racing including as tactician of Wild Oats XI with multiple overall wins in Sydney Hobart Yacht Race."
