A member of Sydney's notorious Ibrahim family will spend a third night in hospital after being gunned down near his luxury inner-city apartment.

On New Year's Day, some of the Ibrahim siblings were sipping on champagne and welcoming the new year at Sydney's most exclusive waterfront drawcards.

Three days later, the violence that had targeted the high-profile family in the past revisited them.

Michael Ibrahim, brother of Kings Cross club owner John Ibrahim and ex-bikie boss Hassan Sam Ibrahim, was shot in the shoulder on Macquarie Street in the Sydney CBD on Sunday night.

Police believe at least two people were involved in the attack and a late model car, possibly a white Audi, was spotted at the scene.

Ibrahim, 36, has spent the past two days in St Vincent's Hospital receiving treatment for his non-life threatening injuries.

It is expected he will spend Tuesday night in the Darlinghurst facility.
