Australian rapper Iggy Azalea could cement her place at the top of the global music industry when she goes head-to-head with Beyonce, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

The 24-year-old from Mullumbimby, nominated for seven MTV Moon Men trophies at Sunday's (Monday AEST) ceremony, is not the only Australian up for awards.

Azalea and Adelaide-born Sia Furler will compete against each other for the top prize of the night - video of the year.

Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer, who will perform at ceremony, are also up for the artist to watch category.

Lorde, the 17-year-old Kiwi songstress, is nominated for best rock video and best female video for Royals.

Beyonce leads the field with eight nominations, with Azalea and rapper Eminem just behind with seven nods.

The ceremony will be held at LA's Forum arena.
