The Australian invasion of the US music industry has continued with rapper Iggy Azalea topping Beyonce, Eminem and Katy Perry for the most nominations at this year's American Music Awards.

Sydney pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer will also compete with Azalea for the new artist of the year award at the November 23 ceremony at LA's Nokia Theatre.

Azalea leads the nominations with six, while Kiwi 17-year-old Lorde has four nods.

"Thank you so much!" Azalea tweeted.

"Not a bad way to start the week off."

Following the Oscars lead of expanding the best picture category, the American Music Awards has expanded its marquee artist of the year category from five to 10 nominees.

The 24-year-old Azalea is competing with Lorde, Beyonce, Luke Bryan, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, John Legend, One Direction, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams for artist of the year.

In the new artist race, Azalea and 5 Seconds of Summer face Bastille, Sam Smith and Meghan Trainor.

While Azalea picked up the most nominations, Legend, Perry and Williams trail closely with five, then Lorde with her four and next is Beyonce, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, OneRepublic and One Direction with three each.

Azalea is also nominated for single of the year, favourite pop/rock female artist, rap/hip hop artist and rap/hip hop album.
