Former Australian Greens leader Christine Milne has vowed to be more dangerous than ever as she bowed out of federal politics.
Senator Milne made a low key surprise farewell speech in the Senate on Wednesday night.
"I will be there as an activist, purple stockings and more dangerous than ever," she told the chamber.
Senator Milne announced her resignation last month and was replaced by Richard Di Natale as leader.
But she's indicated she will still fight the good fight in retirement.
"I'm not leaving politics, I'm not leaving the Greens, I'm leaving political representation, but for the Greens, activism is everything in and out of the parliament," Senator Milne said.
Attorney-General George Brandis said he respected Senator Milne's passion and commitment to public life despite disagreeing with her on policy matters.
Opposition Senate Leader Penny Wong saluted Senator Milne for being one of the few women to lead a political party in Australia.
