Shane Warne has denied reports he's been scratched from the chance to be Australia's caretaker Twenty20 coach in February.
National team coach Darren Lehmann will be in India preparing for a Test series when Australia host Sri Lanka for a three-match T20 tournament.
Warne denied reports he had been ruled out of the role because he hasn't completed a coaching pathway program.
He said the prospect of stepping into the role had come up in a conversation with Cricket Australia's Pat Howard.
"All I'm doing is putting my hand up, I'm happy to help, if they don't want my help or don't need it then that's ok," Warne told reporters on Thursday.
"But I just don't want to be one of those guys who stands back and says 'We need to be doing this or we need to be doing that'.
"I'll always offer my opinion, I'll always try and help out where I can.
"I've had some interesting feedback ... they've said 'We're considering you, thanks very much for putting your hand up. There is a system in place for coaches so we'll weigh all that up and get back to you'."
Jason Gillespie, Ryan Harris, Brad Haddin and Mike Hussey are among the names also thought to be in contention for the role.
Warne said he'd be open to completing a coaching qualification if required but also doubted he'd find the time to do so before February.
If he does get the nod to take the reins, Australia's leading Test wicket-taker doesn't believe it will be the start of a coaching career.
"There are a lot of other things that I'm not saying are more or less important but if I was to coach full-time then my life would actually have to change," he said citing family, commentary, poker and charity commitments.
"There would be some things I have to sacrifice, so I'm not sure about that.
"I haven't thought any further down the track about coaching."
