Prince William has told supporters he's "very happy" following the birth of his second child - a baby girl.

The Duke on Saturday afternoon (Sunday morning AEST) left St Mary's hospital briefly to pick up Prince George before returning to introduce the 21-month-old future king to his new baby sister.

The Duchess of Cambridge on Saturday morning gave birth to a daughter weighing 3.7kg at the private Lindo Wing in London.

Prince William was by Kate's side when the duchess gave birth at 8.34am local time.

But he ducked out in the afternoon to Kensington Palace to pick up Prince George who was born at the same hospital in July 2013.

"I'm very happy, just off to pick up George," a smiling William said as he climbed behind the wheel of a black Land Rover.

The 32-year-old was wearing a white shirt, a blue v-neck jumper and dark blue slacks.

When he returned he waved to supporters while carrying Prince George on one arm.

The little prince waved too. He was dressed in matching white and blue.

Prince George memes have already hit the internet. One features a photograph of a pleased-looking future king and the words: "Still the first born tho ..."

William and Kate earlier on Saturday arrived at the hospital around 6am local time before the duchess gave birth less than three hours later.

The name of the baby will be announced "in due course". Punters are favouring Alice, Charlotte or Elizabeth.

The birth of the princess - the fourth in line to the British throne - is an "eight step" event for photographers.

That means they need at least eight steps on their ladders to guarantee a good photo of the newborn bub and her parents when they leave the Lindo.

No one has a ladder with more than eight steps at the hospital.

"I'd like to see a man who turned up with a 10-step ladder - I'd have a few words with him," a photographer perched atop an eight-step ladder told AAP.

Another photographer standing on a six-step said he had longer ladders available but wasn't allowed to carry them on the London Underground.

It's expected the Cambridges will pose for photographers on the steps of the hospital when they leave.

Sources say that could happen as soon as Saturday night (Sunday morning AEST).
