Officer Hagarty was eating his lunch at a Chipotle fast food outlet last week when he saw a young homeless man poring through a dumpster outside in search of food.

The woman who posted the images of what happened next on Facebook, Rachel Mitchell, said "Through the glass he asked the man if he was hungry”.

"The man nodded yes, and the cop motioned for him to come inside. The cop told him to set what belongings he had next to him and told him to order what he wanted because he would pay for it," she wrote in the post.

"They stood in line together and at the end the cop paid for the man’s meal. A simple handshake was exchanged between them and they parted ways like it was no big deal."

The original post was shared and liked thousands of times and generated many comments commending the officer's act of kindness.

"He did not think he had done anything out of the ordinary. He did not want to brag about what he had done," Chicago Police posted on Facebook.

"Sergeant Hagarty, we thank you for leading the Chicago Police Department by example."
