'Immortal words': Andrew Johns helps France prepare for the Rugby League World Cup

France was once a dominant force in Rugby League, but Les Bleus will be an underdog at the World Cup when it kicks off next Friday.

They made the final of the tournament in 1954 and 1968, and with some help from rugby league great Andrew Johns the French could be set for a renaissance.

Mr Johns has joined France's coaching staff ahead of the tournament and told SBS News he "Jumped at the opportunity."

"The game's given me everything so it's only right to give back," he said.

Mr Johns is well aware of the country's rich history in the code.

"Remember going to Kangaroo reunions and talking to older players about the French team, they said they were unbeatable during the 50's and 60's," Mr Johns said.

Star playmaker Theo Fages said he is relishing the chance to learn from Johns.

"We all know how good of a player he is, he's a legend," Fages said.

"To work with him is a massive opportunity for us."

France begins its campaign against Lebanon next Sunday in Canberra.
