Rennes made it six games unbeaten, climbing to fifth place in the French soccer league, with a 2-0 win at Bordeaux on Saturday.
Forward Ismaila Sarr put Rennes ahead in the 49th minute with his fifth goal of the season, scoring from close range after winger Wahbi Khazri's shot came back off the post.
Midfielder Yoann Gourcuff, once hailed as France's successor to Zinedine Zidane after inspiring Bordeaux to the 2009 title, then scored two minutes after coming off the bench to claim his first goal of the season.
Gourcuff finished in the 86th minute after swapping passes with Khazri, who has shone since joining on loan this season from English second-tier side Sunderland.
Montpellier missed the chance to move up to sixth spot after drawing 2-2 at home to Dijon, who rose above Bordeaux into ninth.
Striker Wesley Said scored twice for Dijon, including a 91st-minute equaliser.
Forward Karl Toko Ekambi's 16th league goal of the season carried him up to fourth in the scoring charts and helped 12th-place Angers beat Caen 3-0.
Struggling Amiens and Troyes shared a 1-1 draw, with Toulouse sandwiched between the two teams in 17th place after conceding a last-gasp equaliser in a 2-2 home draw with Strasbourg.
Former Arsenal striker Yaya Sanogo's second goal in three minutes, coming in injury time, looked to have sealed a win for Toulouse.
But centre back Bakary Kone pounced in the 95th minute to seal a point for the Alsace-based side, who are 15th. Strasbourg are one point ahead of Amiens, two above Toulouse and three clear of 18th-place Troyes.
Defending champions Monaco beat 19th-place Lille 2-1 on Friday but are 14 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain. Monaco are seven points ahead of third-placed Marseille and 12 in front of fourth-placed Lyon before Sunday's games.
PSG visits Nice and Marseille host Lyon on Sunday. Also, bottom club Metz face Nantes and Saint-Etienne takes on Guingamp.
