Incoming governor-general Peter Cosgrove is to meet the Queen even before he officially takes over as her official representative in Australia.

General Cosgrove will have a private audience with Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

The former defence chief will then head down The Mall to meet The Duchess of Cornwall at Clarence House.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott in late January confirmed the military man would take over as the Queen's representative when the term of Quentin Bryce ends in March.

The 66-year-old Vietnam veteran initially didn't see himself taking on the job but others had different ideas.

"If you foresee that there's a call to arms, so to speak, as an old soldier you just get on with it," General Cosgrove said when his appointment was made public.

This year marks 100 years since the beginning of the First World War and the incoming governor-general will likely attend numerous commemorative events to mark Australia's involvement.

Ms Bryce courted controversy in late 2013 when she publicly supported gay marriage and a push for Australia to become a republic.
