A national survey has revealed nearly 45 per cent of regular drug users have used a synthetic drug.
Synthetic drugs are created to mimic the effects of drugs such as ecstasy, but have increased hallucinogenic effects.
Dr Lucy Burns is a senior lecturer at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, and is one of the chief investigators in the annual drug survey.
She told Naomi Selvaratnam synthetic drugs often have an unpredictable effect on users, but are becoming increasingly popular in Australia.
