Independent probe into Gold Coast hospital

An investigation has been ordered into claims of bed shortages and a culture of bullying and intimidation at the Gold Coast hospital.

Independent investigators will look at whether there's a dangerous bed shortage and a culture of bullying and intimidation at the Gold Coast Hospital.

Member for Gaven Alex Douglas told parliament the director of surgery Dr Teresa Withers, and many others, had raised serious safety concerns, but they'd been swept aside.

"When is the minister going to take responsibility and stand down the hospital chief executive Ron Calvert for failing to provide a safe environment for patients and staff?" Dr Douglas said.

The Gold Coast Bulletin had reported that Dr Withers had been sacked as director of surgery for leading a staff revolt.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg told parliament she still had a job with the hospital, but lost the managerial position as part of a restructure.

He said the government was listening to concerns.

Gold Coast Health Services had contacted the department asking for the investigation, he said.

"That is something we are doing. We will have people come from interstate to look at this particular issue," Mr Springborg said.

"We will wait to see the results of that investigation, but we're prepared to investigate those things."
