India has agreed to open its civilian nuclear facilities to greater oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
India calls it a signal of its commitment to abide by its international obligations, although it still refuses to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The United States, which gave India access to international nuclear commerce in a 2008 deal, has called the move important to bring India into the non-proliferation mainstream.
The former head of India's Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Anil Kakodkar, talked with Pallavi Jain from SBS Radio's Hindi program about what it means.
