India's Bhuvneshwar Kumar tore through South Africa's top order on the first day of the Test series on Friday, calling into question home captain Faf du Plessis' decision to bat first at Newlands.
Teetering at 3-12, South Africa were stabilised by an unbroken 95-run partnership between du Plessis and AB de Villiers that guided South Africa to 3-107 at lunch.
De Villiers, back in South Africa's Test team after a long break, justified his selection ahead of regular Temba Bavuma with 59 not out. Du Pleesis was 37 not out.
Kumar (3-39) removed Dean Elgar with the third ball for a duck, had the other opener Aiden Markram lbw for five in the third over, and Hashim Amla caught behind for three in the fifth over before the century partnership.
