India suffering from toilet shortage

Every morning, many Indians gather by the railway tracks to do what most would only do in private.

Nearly half of India's households do not have access to toilets, according to the latest Indian government census.

It's among the few remaining open spaces in an increasingly crowded country.

Figures from the World Health Organisation show 626 million Indians still defecate in the open. More Indians own a mobile phone than have access to a toilet.

While airwaves have become dirt cheap, sewage drain systems remain expensive and scarce.

New Delhi resident Kalaiselvi says women suffer the most, "I'm really very ashamed. So gents and ladies nearby."
