The headmistress of the school in the state of Bihar has fled, and while police continue to establish her whereabouts, Indian authorities have attempted to reassure parents and students that school lunches are safe.

Thousands of children throughout poverty-stricken Bihar have been dumping their meals or refusing to so much as touch the food.

As well as the 23 deaths among children aged 4 to 12, there are some 30 children in hospital. Intitial tests show the food may have been filled with high levels of insecticide.
