Indian minister Satyapal Singh made a controversial comment on Sunday after he told students attending a function that women hoping to marry should not wear jeans.
The minister for human resource development was speaking at a function in Gorakhpur, northern India, when he said: "No boy will be ready to marry a girl who comes to the mandap (wedding stage) in jeans."
A mandap is a traditional platform set up for weddings and religious ceremonies.
The comments come amid national conversations about whether Indians need to follow traditional attire when dressing.
The remark did not sit well with a senior member of the Aam Aadmi Parrty, Preeti Sharma Menon, who blasted the Indian minister on Twitter.
"I feel sorry for whoever married this misogynist Satyapal Singh," it read.
Later in the day he also said those in senior positions in faith groups should not give up their attire to wear jeans, according to reports in India.
A social media poll conducted by Hindustan Times showed 72 per cent of voters did not agree with his statement.
