The Indian High Commission in Canberra says it's still making arrangements for officials to travel to the Curtin detention centre in Western Australia to interview the 157 Tamil asylum seekers who were kept for weeks aboard an Australian Customs ship.

The asylum seekers, reportedly mainly from Sri Lanka, left aboard a boat from India late last month, and were initially detained near Christmas Island.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says the Indian High Commission in Canberra is sending officials to interview them.

According to Mr Morrison, India has agreed to take back any of its citizens and will consider taking any who are Sri Lankans, with residency rights in India.

But High Commissioner Biren Nanda has told Manpreet Singh it's too early to tell what may happen to the asylum seekers.
