CCTV footage shows the faces of the men accused of carrying out the horrific sexual assault on a nun who tried to stop them from robbing the convent.
Four of the six who allegedly raped the 74-year-old have been identified.
Others have been detained for questioning.
West Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi says a reward of 100-thousand rupees, around two thousand dollars, is being offered for any leads on the suspects.
(Local Indian language, then translated:) "I would appeal to the public to provide the police with any information they have that would help to track down the culprits. We need to create an atmosphere of fear for the people who carried out this attack."
Churches across the country have offered prayers for the victim.
The state secretary of the Communist Party of India, Surya Kanta Mishra, visited the nun in hospital.
He says he is ashamed.
"I have been with the patient. I talked to her, expressed a matter of concern, and I told her frankly that, irrespective of whether we are in opposition or government, we feel ashamed that this has happened in this state, or in our country."
Tougher laws and punishments for rape have been introduced, but India continues to witness episodes of sexual violence.
Infuriated students have taken to the streets, demanding justice for the nun.
The protesters include many young women, including Lima D'Rosia.
"Yes, obviously, we are women, we are girls, we are feeling insecure to go anywhere. We are frightened to go anywhere. We want the criminals to be caught. We want the police to please take steps against this."
The rape has added to a sense of fear and dismay among members of the country's Christian minority, who have been deeply upset by recent attacks on churches.
A spate of attacks on churches has prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promise a crackdown on religious violence.
The assault on the 74-year-old is also the latest in a high-profile string of rapes in India.
