Indian soldiers and police have killed two suspected rebels during a fierce gunbattle in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.
Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nitin N. Joshi says security forces received a tip that militants opposed to Indian rule in Kashmir were hiding in the southern region of Shopian. The troops cordoned off a portion of the forest, and a gunbattle erupted on Thursday morning as militants' hurled grenades and opened fire in an attempt to break through.
A police officer said two militants were killed, while at least one was still trapped.
There was no independent confirmation of the clash, and no guerrilla group has commented on the report.
