The all-male council in Uttar, Pradesh ordered that the sisters, aged 23 and 15, be raped and paraded naked through the village with blackened faces as punishment for their brother running away with a married woman.

The sisters are from the underprivileged Dalit caste and have since fled to New Delhi to hide, Al Jazeera reports.

The family has filed a petition with India's Supreme Court seeking protection so that the sisters can return home.

The Hindustan Times reported that the brother, aged 22, and the woman he ran away with had been in love for three years but the woman's parents had married her off against her wishes.

The woman later escaped and ran away with the brother.

Human rights group, Amnesty International has begun a mass campaign to prevent the punishment, collecting more than 90,000 signatures.
