The 25-year-old Indigenous athlete missed the international event in Delhi in 2010, despite recording a personal best in the qualifying rounds.
She told NITV News that making the team for Glasgow had been welcomed by both her and her family.
“We came from a very poor family and my mum showed us at a really early age that we can break that cycle and go to university,” she said.
“She was such a good role model and helped us get out of that trap of ‘we’re not good enough and all that stuff, that we really can be the best we can be.”
Ms McCann is deferring tertiary studies for the games, to be held in Glasgow from the 23rd of July to the 3rd of August, and trying to concentrate on the support she’ll leave at home.
“I really need to just go out there and remember the people who are supporting me within the Indigenous community,” she said.
“I've got a huge extended family that's 100 per cent behind me. It’s really important for me to remember that I'm not out there alone.”
