Indigenous men mark International Men's Day

The role of Indigenous men in their communities and the challenges they face was high on the agenda as leaders and men's groups gathered around the country to mark International Men's Day.

A report released on International Men's Day reveals that men are becoming more hands-on in their roles as fathers but continue to have problems talking about their health and wellbeing.

NITV News joined The Babana Aboriginal Men’s Group today as they set out on a jet boat ride through Sydney Harbour.

The group aboard the Tribal Warrior's Mari Nawi headed to Shark Island to honour the efforts of men who had given something back to their community.

"It’s a huge thanks and kudos and award giving to those men, awards that they would’ve otherwise not have got, because who cares. But we are showing today that we care and we acknowledge them and we remember and we notice what they do," said Babana Aboriginal Men’s Group Chairman Mark Spinks.

A particular man being honoured was Wayne Carr.

Mr Carr says he's been fulfilling an Aboriginal cultural commitment to look after his family after he adopted his grandchildren following the death of their father nine years ago.

"They came to me under extremely difficult circumstances, one side of the family had a really lazy daisy attitude towards them, and they didn’t want to fulfil their obligation to them, to look after them after a tragic time that came about. So I took it upon myself to undertake those cultural obligations," said Mr Carr from the Babana Aboriginal Men’s Group

The theme for this year’s International Men’s Day is ‘Keeping Men and Boys Safe.’
