Indon story decision right: Guardian boss

Guardian Media Group chairman Neil Berkett says publishing details of Australian spying on Indonesia was in the public interest.

The head of the UK-based Guardian Media Group says he's comfortable the news group did the right thing by publishing details of Australian spying on Indonesia.

The spying revelations have caused a diplomatic rift, after details emerged of Australia tapping Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's phone calls.

But Guardian Media Group chairman Neil Berkett defended the practice of jointly publishing, with the ABC, material from exiled former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

"I'm very comfortable that our editorial people followed appropriate processes," he told AAP in Brisbane.

Mr Berkett, who sits on the Bank of Queensland board, also defended the stories despite the diplomatic tensions they have caused with Indonesia.

"The Guardian has a right in terms of its editorial position to explore what is in public interest," he said.

"It was the editorial staffs' and the editor-in-chief's view that that was in the public interest."

Like ABC managing director Mark Scott, Mr Berkett was not told of the spying story before publication.

"My responsibilities are for the commercial side of the Guardian Media Group and we have no direct involvement or intervention in editorial matters."
