Human rights activists have welcomed an announcement by the Indonesian President to lift a travel ban on foreign journalists wanting to visit Papua province.

President Joko Widodo has promised to improve human rights and economic conditions in Papua since coming to office last October.

Pro-independence separatists have clashed with the Indonesian military for decades in the province.

The Human Rights Law Centre says it hopes the lifting of the travel ban on journalists leads to greater public scrutiny of Indonesian authorities in West Papua.

The Centre's spokesman Tom Clarke has told Michael Kenny, it is a significant step forward for human rights in Indonesia.
