Indonesian trespass review set for release

A review of Australian naval incursions into Indonesian territorial waters could be publicly released this week.

A report on how Australian border protection vessels breached Indonesian territorial waters could be publicly released as early as this week.

An internal joint review by Defence and Customs began in late January, after Australia apologised to Indonesia for "unintentional" incursions into its territory as part of Operation Sovereign Borders.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Canberra on Monday that the Indonesian government and Labor Party would receive briefings on the inquiry's outcome before its public release, expected soon.

The opposition will have their briefing late on Tuesday, he said.

"An unclassified report will be released of that review once we've completed the briefings we promised to do," Mr Morrison said.

Opposition immigration spokesman Richard Marles called on Mr Morrison to release the report in full.

"It is important that it is released to the Australian people in full ... because these incidents would appear to go to the very heart of the relationship that we have with Indonesia," he told reporters in Melbourne.
