Greg Inglis is yet to begin running on his troublesome right knee and is no certainty to return for South Sydney's first finals match next week.

Inglis had minor knee surgery last week and missed the Rabbitohs' heavy loss to Brisbane last Thursday.

Souths coach Michael Maguire confirmed on Wednesday Inglis won't be fit to play Sydney Roosters in the Rabbitohs' final round match on Friday and is battling to be right for the first week of the finals.

"With Greg he will possibly be back next week," Maguire said.

"He will run today or run tomorrow and we will see where he is at. But I think we are more looking for him to jump into us next week."

Inglis was sporting a bandage on the knee at Redfern Oval on Wednesday, watching on as his teammates trained, and didn't appear to be moving too freely.

The superstar fullback is joined on the sidelines for the Rabbitohs by John Sutton, who will miss the rest of the season due to a broken leg and Issac Luke, who isn't available until week two of the finals due to a suspension from a shoulder charge.

Alex Johnston has been named at fullback by Maguire to face the Roosters. The 20-year-old was also named in the No.1 jersey last week against the Broncos before Dylan Walker slotted in at the back.

"Everything now is about this week," Maguire said.

"We have had a lot of fun at training and we have had a couple of performances there which were indifferent but it is all in front of us now."

Souths can finish as high as fourth and as low as seventh depending on results from the the NRL's final round.
