Injured baseball fan's condition improves

A fan struck by a broken bat at a Major League Baseball match is improving after being listed as serious a few days ago.

The condition of the fan hit by a broken bat at Fenway Park has been upgraded to fair.

Tonya Carpenter, 44, of Paxton, suffered what police initially said were life-threatening injuries during Friday night's game between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics.

She was struck in the head in the second inning when the bat of Oakland's Brett Lawrie broke and sailed into the seats along the third-base line when he hit a ground ball.

Carpenter's family issued a statement on Monday: "Tonya is responsive, and her condition has been upgraded from serious to fair."

Her condition was listed as serious on Saturday and Sunday at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre.

The Red Sox said on Monday her well-being was forefront in their minds.

The team said Major League Baseball were re-examining fan safety and they would fully participate.
