Injured Isner not stressing just yet

Big-serving American John Isner says his latest injury setback isn't too serious, and he should be fit for the Australian Open.

World No.14 John Isner is confident he will be fit in time for this month's Australian Open despite succumbing to an ankle injury.

Isner missed last year's Australian Open after injuring his knee at the mixed-teams Hopman Cup in Perth.

This time it was an ankle complaint that forced Isner to withdraw from his scheduled clash with Radek Stepanek at Perth Arena on Friday night.

But the 208cm giant is confident of recovering in time for the Australian Open.

"In my previous match I was in a bit of pain," Isner said.

"I was able to play through that match but I was practising (on Thursday) and it just wasn't quite feeling right, so unfortunately I had to pull out.

"I feel awful about this.

"But what I do know is I don't think it's as severe as what happened to me last year.

"So hopefully I can get fit and get ready for the Australian Open coming up because that's the big one."

Fellow American Sloane Stephens will undergo scans after re-injuring her left wrist during the Hopman Cup.

Stephens retired with a sore wrist after losing the first set of her singles match against Petra Kvitova 6-3 on Friday night.

The world No.12 is hopeful of appearing at the Sydney International and Australian Open.

"It's something I've had in the past," Stephens said.

"I went on the court, thought I was going to do my best and see how I got on and it was just too uncomfortable.

"It hurt too much to play so I couldn't finish."
