Mitch Marsh is in danger of missing the start of this year's Ashes series after it was confirmed the all-rounder requires a full shoulder reconstruction.

Marsh was forced to return home early from the current Test cricket tour of India after his troublesome right shoulder flared again.

The 25-year-old has battled through shoulder soreness for much of the summer, and he's been booked in for surgery in Melbourne on Tuesday.

It's expected Marsh will be ruled out of action for between six to nine months.

The Ashes starts on November 23, meaning Marsh is in danger of missing the entire series given he'd need to prove his fitness and form before being selected for Test duties.

The shoulder injury caps off a turbulent time for Marsh, who has copped widespread criticism on social media for his ongoing struggles with the bat.

Marsh has averaged 21.7 across his 21-Test career, posting just one half-century in his past 32 Test innings.

The WA blaster has fared better on the bowling front, with his 140km/h seamers viewed as a crucial weapon in the Test side.

But he struggled to bowl at full pace during his limited opportunities in India, with the lingering shoulder injury halting his influence.

Marsh's injury comes at a bad time for Australia, who were left reeling when it was revealed Mitchell Starc would miss the rest of the India Test tour with a stress fracture in his foot.

Pat Cummins has been called up in place of Starc, while Marcus Stoinis replaces Marsh.
