Injured Powell misses Sydney clash

Wigan's Sam Powell will miss Saturday's World Cup Challenge against the Roosters due to an ankle injury.

Wigan half-back or hooker Sam Powell will miss the World Club Challenge against Sydney Roosters on Saturday after sustaining an ankle injury in training.

The 21-year-old Powell was ruled out of the clash at the Sydney Football Stadium following an initial diagnosis while the full extent of the injury will be investigated by Wigan's specialists on their return to the UK.

Powell had forced his way into coach Shaun Wane's reckoning after impressing in the opening game of the season against Huddersfield and during Wigan's warm-up match against New Zealand Warriors last Wednesday.

Wane said: "It is a big blow for Sam, who has worked really hard in pre-season - but with his character I'm sure he will bounce back stronger."
