Maria Sharapova has been forced to withdraw from the Toronto Masters due to an ongoing hip injury.

Maria Sharapova's hip injury, which has kept her off court for more than a month, forced the world No.2 to withdraw on Sunday from the Toronto Masters.

Organisers of the event, starting on August 5, announced the absence of the LA-based Russian due to the Wimbledon injury, which already caused her pullout from this week's WTA Stanford event.

Sharapova last played in the Wimbledon second round, losing to Michella Larcher De Brito of Portugal.

"I'm extremely disappointed that I am unable to play in Toronto next week as it's one of the best and most important tournaments of the year," Sharapova said.

"I was looking forward to making a healthy return to the courts in front of my Canadian fans but unfortunately I'm just not recovered yet."

The 2009 finalist will have to front up in Toronto for obligatory medical checks and will work in a public relations outing.
