Minnesota's Spanish NBA point guard Ricky Rubio will be sidelined indefinitely due to a left ankle injury.
Rubio, 24, left Friday's game against Orlando in the second quarter, landing awkwardly on a drive to the basket and turned his ankle.
The Timberwolves said an MRI exam on Saturday confirmed Rubio suffered a "significant" ankle sprain.
Rubio, who signed a four-year, $US55 million ($A59.5 million) contract extension last week, is averaging 9.4 points, 10 assists and 5.6 rebounds in his fourth NBA season.
