Inland Qld to dry out after flooding

Queensland's swollen river systems will have a chance to drain with fine days predicted for the beginning of the week, but another downpour is looming.

Central Queensland will have the first part of the new week to dry out but could then be hit by a repeat of the weekend's downpour, forecasters say.

The Bureau of Meteorology kept a close eye on water levels in the Fitzroy and upper Burnett Rivers over the weekend, after some regions of the Banana Shire were hit by more than 300mm of rain in the preceding seven days.

A flood peak of just below eight metres was recorded at the town of Baralaba, west of Biloela, on Sunday.

A huge body of water which had swollen the upper Burnett had begun to drain down to the coastline, the bureau's flood forecaster Jess Carey said.

"That water will move down the system through the towns of Mundubbera, Gayndah and eventually Bundaberg, but all three of those towns won't be seeing any significant issues."

The bureau predicted several dry days to begin the week but come Thursday, new troughs could dump another bout of rain across Queensland.

"It's going to bring really unstable, moist, humid conditions - perfect for storms," Mr Carey said.

The already swamped catchments meant there was no buffer for further flooding, he said.

"The (weekend) flooding hasn't been overly significant, but whatever rainfall we get now is going to be falling on much wetter catchments, so we'll certainly be staffing up next weekend and watching the weekend closely."
