More than 1000 protesters have rallied against the NSW government's WestConnex road plan, shutting down one of Sydney's busiest roads.

A colourful contingent of men, women, children and dogs marched through King Street in Newtown, guided by police on horseback as they voiced fears the road plan would clog local roads.

"WestConnex is a 1950s project," said the city's Lord Mayor Clover Moore at Sydney Park where the march ended.

Instead of focusing on public transport, the government was creating a tunnel that would spew traffic into the inner city, she said to a chorus of boos.

The government, however, is confident WestConnex will ease congestion and speed travel times.
