The President of the Human Rights Commission says she'll personally visit immigration detention centres as part of a national inquiry into children in immigration detention.
The purpose of the inquiry is to investigate the ways in which life in immigration detention affects the health, well-being and development of children.
Professor Gillian Triggs will assess whether laws, policies and practices relating to children in immigration detention meet Australia's international human rights obligations.
Particular attention will be given to the impact of the length of detention on children, what education, health and recreational services are provided and the assessments conducted prior to the transfer of children for detention in regional processing centres.
Professor Triggs has told Aileen Phillips the inquiry is critical for bringing research and policies up to date and holding the government to account.
