Certifications for halal and kosher foods are among those to be investigated by a parliamentary inquiry.

Liberal senator Cory Bernardi has won Senate support to set up an inquiry to look at all certification schemes, including those for organic, kosher, halal and genetically modified foods.

The upper house committee, which will report back in November, will also investigate mandatory labelling and the impact of certification fees on food prices.
