Intelligence office to boost security

A new Office of National Intelligence will be established to better coordinate Australia's security intelligence agencies.

Laws to set up a new agency to coordinate Australia's intelligence strategy and provide advice to the prime minister have been introduced to parliament.

The Office of National Intelligence is based on models used by or being taken up by Australia's Five Eyes intelligence partners, the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Canada.

The office will have responsibility for collecting, interpreting and sharing intelligence information.

Nick Warner, the former head of the Australian Security Intelligence Services, will lead the office.
