International Rules plans announced

Australia, Ireland and the United States will each host a two-Test series under plans to consolidate International Rules in the AFL calendar.

International Rules will return in 2017, with Australian and Irish football chiefs agreeing to six future Tests including a series in the United States.

AFL and Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) bosses have agreed that appetite for the hybrid game has been revived in recent years.

There'll be no Tests this year but Australia will host a two-match series in November 2017, with Ireland to return the favour after that.

The duelling countries then hope to stage another two-Test series in America, which boasts strong Australian and Irish communities.

The AFL believes the recent selection policy of only picking All Australian players has helped to change the fortunes of the once-maligned hybrid code.

"The last two years of the International Rules matches played in 2014 and 2015 was able to showcase the best aspects of our two respective sports," AFL football operations boss Mark Evans said.

"We were fortunate enough to win in Perth and then pipped at the line in Dublin last year."

"We look forward to hosting Ireland again, returning to Irish shores and exploring how we can take matches or exhibition games to the many expat Irish and Australians living in the US in the years ahead."
