The Stronger Futures laws, which continue the former Howard coalition government's Northern Territory intervention, are due to be debated today.
The intervention began in 2007 to address violence and alcohol abuse in Aboriginal communities.
The opposition and the Australian Greens are expected to combine to have the sunset clause of the legislation reduced from 10 years to five years and the review period from seven to three years.
Last week, Minister for Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin said the ten year extension is necessary because problems in Northern Territory indigenous communities are so entrenched.
