A visiting Indian movie star says film is a great relationship builder between nations.

71-year-old Amitabh Bachchan is known as the "godfather of Indian film" and has starred in more than 150 Indian films.

He made his Hollywood debut in Australian director Baz Luhrmann's remake of the Great Gatsby last year.

He's also campaigned to eradicate polio in his home country.

Bachchan is in Melbourne to launch the Indian film festival, which has opened with a 3D version of his 1975 film Sholay.

He told SBS Hindi broadcaster Savita Soni the festival is a good way of promoting ties between Australia and India.
