Up to five men have forced their way into a NSW man's home and made off with his dog - but the stolen pooch has already found its way back.

Police have been told the 50-year-old man was at home in Wombat Street, Young on Saturday night when four or five men forced their way in.

The intruders kicked the man in his leg and head, before leaving with his dog, which later made its own way home.

The injured owner was in hospital on Sunday evening with a broken leg.
