Investigation reveals illegal Foxtel ring

Police have cracked a network they claim provided thousands of Australians with unlawful Foxtel programming.

A Sydney man who allegedly helped thousands of Australians steal Foxtel services could be jailed for up to five years.

Federal police allege the 29-year-old ran an illegal network supplying about 8000 customers with smartcard numbers, allowing them unlawful access to Foxtel programming.

Police found several decoders and smartcards when they searched the man's house and business in western Sydney in November.

They have charged him with five copyright offences, carrying a maximum penalty of five years in jail.

"Criminal activity such as this costs consumers - who may have to pay higher fees to absorb losses and the cost of theft-prevention measures," said AFP commander Ray Johnson.

The man is due to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday.
