IOC boss to rally for Brisbane Games bid

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach will urge Brisbane to bid for the 2028 Games when in Australia next week.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach will rally Brisbane to bid for the 2028 Games when in Australia next week.

Bach will hold a series of high-powered meetings while in Australia, including with Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Bach's visit comes as Queensland mayors launch a feasibility study to determine whether to proceed with a Brisbane-centred bid to host the 2028 Olympics.

The South East Queensland Council of Mayors study, which has the backing of the Australian Olympic Committee, will consider the merits of Brisbane being the focal point of an Olympics with involvement from regional centres including the Gold Coast.

An Australian Olympic Committee spokesman on Friday said the Brisbane bid would be a high priority item on Bach's agenda.

The German will be the first IOC president to visit Australia since Jacques Rogge in 2005.

The study into any Brisbane bid has already won support from the AOC, which would need to formally approve any bid before it is lodged.

AOC president John Coates has told the south-east Queensland mayors that their feasibility study should be completed by the end of next year.

If proceeding with the bid, federal and state government support, along with corporate and sport sector backing, would be needed in 2017.

Bach is expected to meet with the prime minister next Wednesday before attending a series of functions at Sydney's Olympic Park, where the last Olympics held in Australia were staged in 2000.
