The launch of Apple's iPhone 6 has helped Telstra enjoy a positive start to the new financial year, chief executive David Thodey says.

While growth in the mobile market is slowing and there has been a drop off in pre-paid subscribers, revenue growth in the company's key sector remains strong, he said.

"Overall, in mobiles, market customer growth continues to moderate," Mr Thodey said on Thursday.

"We are also seeing some de-activations in our pre-paid subscriber base. However, our strong mobile revenue trends have continued."

He said the telco giant performed well during the first quarter, aided by the launch of the iPhone 6 in September.

"I am pleased to report that the positive business momentum we reported for last year has continued into the first quarter of this financial year,' he said.

"The iPhone 6 launch was pleasing for us."

Average revenue from post-paid customers was also improving, Mr Thodey said.

Telstra's profit grew 14 per cent to $4.27 billion in 2013/14, with underlying earnings rising 4.7 per cent.

Underlying earnings are forecast grow at a similar rate in the current year.
